Job Summary

We are looking to recruit an experienced Solicitor who is seeking to develop their inquest work alongside fantastic leadership, supervisory and service development opportunities. The Solicitor would act for and on behalf of Cardiff and Vale UHB in the management of Inquest proceedings and related requests from the Coroner. The Solicitor will investigate factual circumstances of cases and advise on management of Inquest proceedings.

The Solicitor will have the opportunity to attend inquests, advocate on behalf of Cardiff and Vale UHB and where appropriate liaise with the Coroner.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post;

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work with the Inquest Team, Clinicians and data systems, as well as direct work with the Coroner. The Solicitor will be responsible for leading legally on the delivery of the service, supervision, training, and creating meaningful and impactful change. This post will sit alongside the Head of Inquests and Assistant Director of Patient Experience and will provide the team with legal advice and guidance to work within Cardiff and Vale UHB.

The post holder would lead on service development alongside the leads and build strong partnerships with other leaders in the wider team Cardiff and Vale UHB and beyond. There will be close working relationships between this post and the Head of Inquests

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge (Essential)

  • Law Degree & Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (or equivalent)
  • Qualified with litigation and advocacy rights
  • Qualified solicitor admitted to the roll of solicitors of England and Wales
  • CILEx Litigator and Advocate (Civil)

Desirable

  • Professional Skills Course or equivalent Academic modules in Medical Law (Mental Capacity and Mental Health)

Experience (Essential)

  • Experience gained through training within the relevant field

Desirable

  • Experience of the relevant field/fields of Law i.e. clinical negligence/personal injury and Inquests.
  • Advocacy in Coroner's Court.
  • Experience of making presentations to non-legal staff

Skills and Attributes (Essential)

  • IT Skills/Computer literate to include the ability to learn new technologies and IT introduced.
