Job Overview

We’re looking for a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – School Nurse to support the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh area. The successful candidate will work as the named School Nurse for an identified high school/college and a cluster of primary schools, delivering the Healthy Child Programme and fostering collaboration with schools, families and multi‑agency partners.

Duties of the Job

• Actively manage the defined caseload using a public‑health approach.

• Lead the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme 5–19 and coordinate public health interventions.

• Provide leadership to the 0‑19 team, including preceptorship, supervision, personal development reviews and one‑to‑ones.

• Offer advice and support to parents, carers and health team members.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a school nursing caseload, ensuring effective service planning and allocation of resources.
  • Analyse data to inform service improvement and monitor health outcomes for children, young people and families.
  • Support mental and physical wellbeing, safeguarding children and ensuring effective signposting and referral pathways.
  • Deliver therapeutic interventions and accessible support to young people, including those not in school.
  • Maintain NMC registration, accurate records, evidence‑based practice and medicines management.
  • Supervise staff, delegate tasks, facilitate team development and contribute to service improvement.
  • Lead and participate in clinical audit, support research and use findings to advance practice.
  • Communicate sensitively with families, share information appropriately and promote a culture where concerns can be raised safely.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nursing qualification in School Nursing.
  • Maths and English GCSE or Equivalent.
Professional Registration
  • Registered Nurse (Child, Adult, Midwifery, Learning Disability, or Mental Health).
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nursing qualification in School Nursing.
Experience
  • Experience of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working.
  • Experience working with children, young people, and families.
  • Experience working in a school or educational setting.
  • Evidence of health promotion or public health work.
Skills
  • Lead the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Assess health needs of children and young people and implement SMART planning.
  • Lead holistic, inclusive, evidence‑based interventions while using robust evidence to identify vulnerability, inequality and risk.
  • Safeguard and prioritise support for children and young people most at risk.
  • Strong research skills, critically appraising epidemiological evidence.
  • Deliver health education sessions.
  • Lead a team, provide guidance and direction to a skill‑mix with clear delegation.
  • Reflective practitioner applying learning to improve practice.
  • Basic IT literacy in Microsoft Office platforms.
  • IT skills relevant to school health records and reporting.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Systm One Electronic Patient Records.
Knowledge
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of key government policy and drivers within Public Health and Education.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
  • Awareness of current issues affecting school‑aged children (e.g., mental health, immunisations).

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
