Software Engineer
Our users are not software people. They are electricians, photographers and consultants who need to get paid without learning an app, and who will abandon anything that makes them feel stupid.
You would own design for the flows they use most. That means research you run yourself, prototypes engineers can build from, and staying with a feature through implementation rather than handing it over at the mockup.
The workWhat the job looks like:
- Own end-to-end design for major areas, from the research through to the shipped detail
- Talk to customers yourself, regularly, and act on what you hear
- Produce designs that survive contact with the codebase
- Extend the design system as the product grows
- Hold the quality bar across the product, including other people’s work
Five or so years designing software, with a portfolio that shows depth rather than breadth. We would rather see one flow you fought for over three years of thumbnails.
The core skill here is simplification: taking something genuinely complicated and making it feel obvious, without hiding the parts that matter.
Where you workThis one is fully remote. We care where you are only insofar as the law does: you need the right to work in the UK or the US already, because there is no office attached to this job for us to sponsor you into. Beyond that, work from wherever you work best.
We overlap a few hours a day and write the rest down. Most decisions live in documents and pull requests rather than meetings, which is partly a philosophy and mostly a consequence of being spread across time zones.
Pay and the rest of it$100,000–$140,000 a year, reviewed every year against the market for where you live, plus share options — everyone here owns a piece of the company.
Flexible hours, a budget for whatever laptop and desk you actually want, an annual learning budget, generous paid time off that we check people take, and paid parental leave for every parent however you become one.
