Job Summary
Circa £26,000 per annum (full time equivalent salary) depending on experience.
Based at our offices in Cardiff.
We are looking for an experienced, detail‑oriented Shipping Customs Clerk to join our growing team at BAY Shipping on a permanent basis. The role involves managing import and export documentation and ensuring compliance with all customs regulations. The ideal candidate will coordinate with freight forwarders, carriers, customs authorities and colleagues to facilitate the timely clearance of goods and maintain accurate records.
Normal working hours are 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 5:30pm.

The roleAs a Shipping Customs Clerk, you will be responsible for preparing and processing shipping documentation, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, and coordinating with freight carriers and government agencies to facilitate smooth import and export operations.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare, review, and submit import and export documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, customs declarations, etc.).
- Ensure shipments comply with local, national, and international trade laws and customs regulations.
- Classify goods, assign correct tariff/HS codes and determine duties, taxes and fees.
- Accurately determine payable duties, VAT, excise and other charges.
- Submit entries electronically and coordinate with customs authorities for clearance.
- Monitor changes in customs laws, trade agreements and tariff schedules.
- Communicate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, suppliers and government agencies.
- Address delays, documentation discrepancies, inspections and holds.
- Maintain accurate records for auditing and compliance purposes.
- Monitor shipments to ensure timely customs clearance and delivery.
- Previous experience in shipping, logistics or customs processing preferred.
- Knowledge of import/export regulations and trade documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and shipping software systems.
- Excellent communication and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work within a small team.
