This role provides full Technical Engineering support to the production function at our Carlisle site, under the leadership of the Area Engineering Manager, working alongside the production team.
Responsibilities- Provide technical engineering support to the production function at the Carlisle site.
- Cover other Engineering Technicians when they are away from work, including different shifts; stand in for charge hands and Area Engineering Managers as needed.
- Manufacture the company’s product to an agreed specification in a cost effective and safe manner; focus on meeting daily requirements right first time in a safe factory environment with ongoing cost improvement.
- Train, assess competencies, mentor and support ATMs, Apprentices and Team Members in developing engineering skills.
- Input into team action plans and continuous improvement activities, including OEE, Condition Based Monitoring (CBM), tiered meetings, focused improvement and workplace organisation (5S).
- Maintain mechanical and electrical integrity of equipment: plan and perform maintenance inspections, review frequencies, parts used, and recommend alternatives; manage maintenance schedules and improvements to schedules.
- Overhaul and repair plant; manage stores requisitions for parts and contract services; expedite supplier deliveries as needed (on SAP or equivalent).
- Monitor plant conditions, report defects, and drive reliability by managing downtime, PPM conformance and engineering budget usage; use SAP PM where applicable.
- Report and present performance data, trends, and fault data; act as a role model for engineering standards.
- Carry out safety checks on equipment in line with legislation and standard methodology; ensure communication and action on non-conformance issues.
- Manage engineering duties across the factory to reduce idle time; consider sustainability, waste minimisation and energy use where appropriate.
- Manufacture products to specification in a safe, cost-effective manner.
- Multi-skilled engineer with experience across bearings, gearboxes, motors, shafts, drives, seals; bench fitting (drilling, grinding, bench tools, turning); experience with hydraulics, pneumatics and PLCs.
- Ability to operate in varied environments; capable of efficient decision-making under pressure and focused on continuous improvement.
- Formal engineering qualification to at least City & Guilds level, NVQ level 3 or equivalent in mechanical and/or electrical subject area; practical working experience.
- Strong teamwork and autonomous work capability; confident communication to mentor colleagues.
- Additional criteria: mechanical and electrical comprehension, fault finding, data analysis, risk assessment, permit to work, technical report writing, knowledge of safe working practices and relevant legislation, numeracy, literacy, dexterity, attention to detail, basic PC skills, problem solving, influencing skills, PLC skills (highly desirable).
- 12-hour fixed night shifts (6pm–6am) on Pitman shift pattern.
- Schedule:
Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (week
1);
Wednesday and Thursday (week
2); every other weekend off. - Flexibility for training, project work, or cross-shift initiatives; shift pattern changes in line with contract of employment.
