We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager to head up a team of 70+ staff to include managers, frontline staff and self‑employed owner drivers at our Carlisle Depot. It’s a pretty big role, with approx 2,500 – 3,000 parcels, delivery and collection routes running daily. You will be critical to securing the success of one of our rural operations.
About the roleAs the most senior manager role within the depot, you will oversee the collection and delivery of an average 2,500 parcels daily. You’ll ensure everything runs smoothly, lead and coordinate resources, review all key measurement outputs, identify trends in unit performance, and ensure teams focus on process and customer improvement at all times.
Responsibilities- Manage the depot leadership team to ensure successful parcel collection and delivery across a seven‑day operation.
- Plan and deliver a successful peak operation using permanent and seasonal workforce.
- Ensure effective resourcing by recruiting and retaining owner drivers.
- Achieve cost targets, first‑time delivery, end‑to‑end service quality, and year‑on‑year productivity improvements.
- Oversee commercial performance, including profit and loss management and staff and non‑staff budgets.
- Maintain compliance with all legal and business requirements relating to fleet operations and driver regulations.
- Build and sustain a positive working relationship with the depot union representative.
41 hours per week. Working hours will vary depending on operational requirements but typically 08:00 – 16:00, Monday to Friday with a degree of flexibility.
About you- Experience in express parcels and experience working in a unionised environment.
- Leading and developing a team of managers to improve performance and guide through periods of change.
- Ability to build strong relationships with your team, unions and key stakeholders.
- Excellent visible leadership and communication skills demonstrated in an operational environment.
- Analytical skills with the ability to interpret detailed management information.
- O Licence / CPC qualification would be advantageous.
- Ability to negotiate contracts with self‑employed owner drivers.
- H&S knowledge and compliance.
