Required qualifications

Current unrestricted certification as a phlebotomist or higher. A minimum of two years recent clinical work experience as a phlebotomist in a phlebotomy lab environment;
Associate degree in a healthcare related field and minimum of one (1) year of healthcare related teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN), licensed in the state of New Mexico strongly preferred.
  • Equivalent clinical credentialing (such as LPN, CMA, RMA, CCMA, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician) may be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing, Allied Health, or a related field preferred.
  • Certified Bloodborne Pathogen Instructor a plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in venipuncture, specimen handling, safety protocols, and healthcare communication.

Equivalent combinations of education, certification, and clinical teaching experience may be considered in lieu of formal degree requirements. Clinical supervisory experience in a hospital or laboratory setting will be viewed as favorable.

Purpose and Scope

The Adjunct Instructor – Phlebotomy provides high‑quality instruction in clinical and laboratory settings to prepare students for certification and workforce readiness. Registered Nurses and other licensed healthcare professionals are strongly encouraged to apply. Under the supervision of the Allied Health Department Chair, the instructor verifies student eligibility documentation, oversees clinical learning, and ensures safe and ethical practice. Responsibilities include coordinating and assessing clinical rotations, grading assignments, communicating with clinical partners and preceptors, identifying student learning needs, and maintaining current knowledge of industry standards.

Evening or weekend instruction may be required. Workload averages 8–12 hours per week, depending on program needs. Southeast New Mexico College values clinical excellence, professional mentorship, and student success. Duties and Responsibilities
  • This position will have teaching responsibilities in the areas of phlebotomy.
  • The position includes the teaching of theory and phlebotomy, assisting with curriculum development.
  • Assume duties and responsibilities required of all faculty members including evening and weekend instruction as needed to meet student needs.
  • Plans, designs, and provides clinical and/or laboratory instruction which reflect an understanding of the program’s objectives and curriculum.
  • Evaluates student achievement of curricular and course objectives and learning outcomes related to phlebotomy knowledge and practice.
  • Participates in advising and guidance of the students.
  • Hold office hours for the purpose of meeting with students to provide individual instruction, guidance, and remediation.
  • May assist in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation.
