Overview

Strategic Assessments Engineer II/Planner II — Join to apply for the Strategic Assessments Engineer II/Planner II role at Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).

This role assesses how long-term regulatory, economic, and industry trends will shape the reliability, efficiency, and adequacy of generation and transmission infrastructure. You’ll analyze the interactions of energy systems, including the gas-electric interdependencies, to identify emerging risks and inform forward-looking decisions. The position blends technical work with strategic influence, translating complex data into clear insights and actionable recommendations for internal teams, regulators, and industry leaders to shape policy, align stakeholders, and drive long-term planning.

Responsibilities
  • Analyzing industry trends and regulatory developments to assess their impact on power system planning.
  • Evaluating the reliability and adequacy of the grid using advanced engineering and economic tools.
  • Monitoring emerging energy issues, including gas-electric interdependencies, to guide strategy and mitigate risk.
  • Creating compelling reports and presentations tailored to a range of audiences.
  • Collaborating across teams to solve tough challenges and ensure regulatory alignment.
  • Engaging with regulators and industry partners to build consensus and support sound decision-making.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or technical fields. The degree type will determine whether you are considered for an Engineer or a Planner title. Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
Compensation & Benefits

The base salary compensation range is $98,000-$115,000 USD annually. Salaries may vary based on location, competencies, education/professional certifications, and experience. The position is eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. Benefits include a comprehensive package with 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.
