We are excited to launch this innovative pilot role led and funded by Lancashire & South Cumbria Cancer Alliance and hosted by the Primary Care Training Hub, aimed at cancer education across primary care.
This 12-month fixed‑term post (employment or secondment) offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of cancer training and workforce development, helping equip primary care teams with the skills, confidence and knowledge to deliver early diagnosis and contribute to improving cancer outcomes.
You will be part of a collaborative effort to bring high‑impact education directly to primary care teams. By identifying gaps, creating solutions and championing best practice you will help support the people who make the biggest difference.

About usWhilst this employment/secondment is with the Lancashire and South Cumbria Primary Care Training Hub (L&SC PCTH), the role is led by the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance, working in partnership together.
Job responsibilitiesThe Primary Care Education Facilitator (Early Diagnosis of Cancer) plays a key role in improving early cancer diagnosis by supporting the education and training of primary care staff. The role focuses on enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of GPs, practice nurses and other primary care staff in recognising early signs and symptoms of cancer, encouraging patients to participate in screening programmes and ensuring best practice in patient communication and care.
Key Responsibilities
Education and Training Delivery
- Support primary care teams to identify learning needs in respect to cancer awareness, timely presentation and screening
- Design, coordinate and deliver training sessions on early cancer diagnosis for primary care staff
- Develop educational materials and resources focused on cancer symptoms, screening programmes and referral guidelines using reliable, reputable sources such as national cancer organisations, including Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK, for the most current and accurate information
- Facilitate workshops and communities of practice to support and encourage shared learning and best practice
Stakeholder Engagement
- Manage and oversee the operational element of the admin/project support provision to support events and training sessions
- Work closely with GPs, practice nurses and the wider primary care workforce to identify training needs related to early cancer diagnosis
- Collaborate with the Cancer Alliance, Primary Care Training Hub, Cancer Education Hub, Primary Care Workforce Development Teams and cancer charities to enhance educational opportunities
- Engage with patient groups and VCSFE organisations to support awareness and improve knowledge of early cancer symptoms and screening programmes
Quality Improvement
- Work with primary care colleagues to understand the data in each PCN and use this to develop bespoke training and education to improve early diagnosis
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training interventions through surveys, feedback and outcome measures
- Identify ways in which primary care teams can use the most up‑to‑date referral processes and good safety‑netting processes by providing and delivering education sessions
Reporting and Sustainability Planning
- Provide regular reports to the Cancer Alliance and Primary Care Training Hub on the role's impact
- Develop case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of training interventions
- Work with stakeholders to integrate early cancer diagnosis education into future workforce plans
- Excellent communication, facilitation and presentation skills
- Ability to engage and influence a range of stakeholders, including clinicians
