Position: Volunteer Warden (Myers Allotment)

At Butterfly Conservation we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. The Volunteer Warden role helps ensure that local nature reserves are a haven for wildlife and visitors.

What you will be doing
  • Carry out tasks on the reserve which deliver the site management plans. For example, scrub bashing, fence maintenance etc.
  • Work with the local branch, partners and Butterfly Conservation staff to:
  • Ensure the site is adequately surveyed and monitored.
  • Develop a site work plan for the year, including practical conservation tasks and engagement.
  • Promote good practice and compliance with health and safety policies.
  • Promote the site for it’s butterfly and moth interest where applicable, taking opportunities to recruit new volunteers and members where possible
  • Seek to influence the management of the land around the site where possible.
The skills you need
  • You need to be capable of working outside for several hours, sometimes on steep slopes or uneven ground, depending on the site.
  • You will sometimes need to transport tools and equipment and carry them to the area you are working in.
  • Experience of carrying out practical conservation for butterflies and moths is helpful but not essential
  • A good understanding of the habitat requirements of butterflies and moths or a willingness to learn.
  • An understanding of safe tool use, or a willingness to learn.
  • Able to use simple technology to access and share information – or a willingness to learn.
  • Able to represent Butterfly Conservation and our values.

Disclaimer

This role is active year-round and there is generally flexibility over the days and time you volunteer.

The amount of time you give is up to you, but we ask that you offer at least 1-2 hours a week on average. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 6 moths in this role. You will be asked to complete training for the role and occasionally participate in refresher training.

May involve accessing steep slopes, uneven ground, or remote sites. Please check with the named contact for this opportunity.

Children aged 13-15 must be accompanied by an adult whilst volunteering. If you are aged 16 or 17, your parent may give written permission for you to volunteer unaccompanied.

Please be aware that our insurance cover differs slightly for people aged 75 or over. Please contact the Volunteering Team for more information
