Teacher Assistant – Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County
Want to make a difference in a child’s life? Join Comm Unify’s team by becoming a Head Start Teacher Assistant at the Betty Sanchez Head Start Center in Carpinteria. This part‑time position (30 hrs per week) offers competitive hourly rates ($16.50–$19.00) based on your qualifications, and full benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, vacation, paid holidays, and a fully vested retirement plan with a 5% match.
Under the supervision of a Site Supervisor, you will support classroom teachers to implement a high‑quality early childhood program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintain 100% supervision of all children, by sight and sound at all times, when in the teacher/child ratio.
- Consistently use positive child guidance methods.
- Develop positive relationships with each child and with parents.
- Assist in meal preparation, mealtime, and clean up.
- Set cots or mats out for nap time and assist children during napping.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary classroom environment.
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information about enrolled families.
- Attend and contribute to regular staff meetings and curriculum planning meetings.
- Help implement the curriculum under teacher direction, including small group, field trips, mealtimes, and one‑on‑one activities with children.
- Contribute to child observations and ongoing assessment.
- Assist children with toileting, diapering, feeding, and other physical care needs.
- Be aware of all center’s children with food allergies and ensure they receive the doctor‑recommended substitutions.
- Be sensitive to children with special needs.
- Function as a positive team member; communicate effectively with families and co‑workers.
- Attend parent meetings and home visits when requested.
- Perform other comparable duties as required.
Child Development Teacher Assistant Permit or higher from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and enrollment in a Child Development Associate credential program to be completed within two (2) years of hire.
Computer SkillsKnowledge of internet software and word‑processing software.
Certifications, Licenses, RegistrationsCurrent Child Development Permit;
Pediatric First Aid and CPR card.
Skills and Abilities
Experience working with children with disabilities is desirable; bilingual preferred.
Other QualificationsSuccessful completion of a pre‑employment physical examination, tuberculosis clearance, and Community Care Licensing fingerprint approval. Provide verification of state‑required vaccines upon hire (influenza, pertussis, measles).
