A certified general accountant, a title usually used in Canada, is a type of accounting professional who has been trained and certified to perform a range of tasks related to business analysis and the management of financial matters. An individual who becomes certified is a member of the Certified General Accountants Association and is qualified to deliver accounting advice, prepare tax forms, and provide other financial guidance.

Certified general accountants review and analyze a company’s financial information. They are typically relied on to forecast financial dealings, devise plans to solve problems that may arise, and ensure that a company’s financial strategies are implemented properly. In addition, they may handle auditing, tax preparation, and business consulting.

People often confuse a bookkeeper with an accountant. A bookkeeper’s primary responsibility is to keep the books, recording transactions, while a certified general accountant focuses on business planning, analysis, and monitoring to support financial strategy.

A certified general accountant can work in a variety of industries, including industrial companies, financial institutions, government agencies, public practice firms, professional organizations, and entrepreneurial ventures, both in Canada and internationally.

To become a certified general accountant, a person usually must secure a bachelor’s degree—often in commerce, though this is not a strict requirement. They must complete general accountant courses through the Certified General Accountants Association, pass an examination to obtain the designation, and typically gain relevant work experience and recommendations, including from an evaluator in the certification program.
