Lead Software Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer for a permanent, fully remote opportunity. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring strong technical expertise and the ability to guide a team delivering complex public sector digital services.

• Lead, mentor, and support a team of engineers, ensuring high‑quality delivery and adherence to best practices
• Contribute to architecture, technical strategy, and engineering standards
• Work closely with Product Managers, Delivery Managers, and public sector stakeholders
• Ensure compliance with GDS standards, including accessibility (WCAG), security, and performance
• Champion engineering excellence through TDD, CI/CD, and automated testing
• Drive cloud‑native delivery using AWS and containerised environments (Docker, EKS)
• Promote continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across teams

• Experience with Nunjucks templating
• Proven experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
• Strong public sector project experience (mandatory)
• Experience with AWS cloud environments
• Containerisation experience using Docker and EKS (Kubernetes)
• Strong experience implementing CI/CD pipelines (Git Lab preferred)
• Solid understanding of TDD and automated testing practices
• Working knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards
• Eligible for BPSS clearance
• Experience delivering services aligned to GDS standards
• Knowledge of microservice or cloud‑native architectures
• Experience working within consultancy or client‑facing environments
