Role OverviewWe are seeking a Lead Software Engineer for a permanent, fully remote opportunity. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring strong technical expertise and the ability to guide a team delivering complex public sector digital services.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and support a team of engineers, ensuring high‑quality delivery and adherence to best practices
- Contribute to architecture, technical strategy, and engineering standards
- Work closely with Product Managers, Delivery Managers, and public sector stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with GDS standards, including accessibility (WCAG), security, and performance
- Champion engineering excellence through TDD, CI/CD, and automated testing
- Drive cloud‑native delivery using AWS and containerised environments (Docker, EKS)
- Promote continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across teams
- Experience with Nunjucks templating
- Proven experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
- Strong public sector project experience (mandatory)
- Experience with AWS cloud environments
- Containerisation experience using Docker and EKS (Kubernetes)
- Strong experience implementing CI/CD pipelines (Git Lab preferred)
- Solid understanding of TDD and automated testing practices
- Working knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards
- Eligible for BPSS clearance
- Experience delivering services aligned to GDS standards
- Knowledge of microservice or cloud‑native architectures
- Experience working within consultancy or client‑facing environments
