Responsibilities
  • Greets patients by confirming patient identification; reviewing ultrasound request; checking for special instructions; confirming anticipated service with patients.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of ultrasound procedures; explaining equipment; answering questions.
  • Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
  • Prepares preliminary reports and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established procedures.
  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information, medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Coordinates work schedule with Departmental Director and/or scheduling desk to assure workload coverage.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
  • Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory.
  • Maintains a daily log of patients seen/completes exam billing forms.
  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.
  • Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate Director or designee.
  • Provides in‑service education to the team on requirements of sonographic procedures as requested by other members of the health‑care team.
  • Assists with making medical appointments for patients needing special examinations such as CAT scans, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine.
  • Operates Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, HIS/RIS and PACS computer system.
  • Helps implement the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) for the assigned departments.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations in an urgent manner and performs on‑spot emergency assistance which may include first aid and/or CPR.
  • Practices and behaves in a professional, safe and ethical manner at all times.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
  • Participates in performance improvement and educational activities; completes all CEU’s as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.
  • Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.
  • Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
  • Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.
  • Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.
  • Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, standard precautions and hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony’s Safety Manual.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.
