Job SummaryTeaching assistants for 1211L, 1212L, and 3422L. TAs are assigned to one or more laboratory course sections that consist of 18 to 45 students. Summer is bi-weekly lab meetings.
Responsibilities- Read each lab experiment and ask instructor for any clarification needed before the lab begins.
- Attend and listen to the pre-lab instructions.
- Supervise two laboratory periods each week, circulating throughout the lab section visually monitoring student performances and answering any questions or guiding the students in determining the answers.
- Treat all students fairly and equally.
- Use a pleasant tone and approach with others.
- Promptly relay any problems encountered with the experiments or laboratory sessions to the supervising lab instructor.
- Enforce all safety regulations.
- Ensure that all lab materials are returned at the end of lab and that the lab room is clean.
- Report equipment maintenance or room maintenance problems to the laboratory coordinator.
- Have sufficient knowledge to answer students' questions regarding the material presented.
- Perform any additional duties specified by the instructor.
- Successful completion (a grade of B or higher) of the chemistry course(s) which are appropriate to your assignment as an assistant, satisfactory evaluations in any previous position as a departmental assistant, and satisfactory progress toward a degree.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, confidentiality, and commitment to the chemistry TA program.
- Must be a current University of West Georgia student enrolled for six credit hours and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative grade‑point average unless otherwise noted/indicated by the hiring department.
- Superior customer service skills, positive and friendly attitude. Willingness to work cooperatively with others. Ability to handle confidential information with care and ability to prioritize duties. Basic computer skills and knowledge, attentiveness to details, and good organizational skills and initiatives.
- Physical requirement: may involve moving/lifting equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Be able to work effectively with others.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Keep a positive and friendly attitude.
- Must have taken and successfully passed the lab as a student prior to applying.
