Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Development Engineer to support Southwire's growth initiatives across various verticals of the core utility business. Under limited direction, the successful candidate will perform complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering, particularly high voltage engineering, testing, and measurement principles. Familiarity with mechanical and industrial engineering concepts is also required. The individual will act as a Core Team Leader/Project Manager, leading a team of diverse disciplines such as Product Management, Operations, Certification, and Test Labs towards the successful design, manufacturing, and commercialization of new products.
Additionally, the candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Expert supporting HV/MV test laboratories across multiple locations, including the HV test lab in Huntersville, MV test labs, the Cofer Technology Center, and mobile test resources. The individual shall follow a Stage Gate development process to ensure products are designed and manufactured to the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
The candidate will proactively seek and implement initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead investigations and develop solutions as principal investigator or team leader, managing research projects using the Stage Gate process.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners, including manufacturing plants, test laboratories, customers, vendors, and contractors.
- Manage projects with autonomy in a fast-paced environment, ensuring timely and within-budget completion.
- Provide testing, troubleshooting, and technical support to test laboratories across Southwire.
- Act as a liaison with external electrical test labs such as UL, CSA, KEMA, and NEETRAC.
- Handle multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Recommend projects, product improvements, or cost reductions.
- Represent the group in meetings and conferences, provide customer training, resolve technical issues, and analyze Voice of the Customer (VOC).
- Deliver technical presentations to customers and industry forums.
- Support manufacturing throughout the production cycle, including testing plans, design handovers, and problem-solving on the manufacturing floor.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering;
Master’s preferred. - At least ten years of engineering experience in the electrical power industry.
- Product development experience.
- Experience with manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of HV/MV electrical testing and high voltage engineering.
- Lean Six Sigma knowledge is highly desirable.
- Skills in statistical analysis are highly desirable.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Multiphysics simulations is preferred.
