The Research & Development (R&D) Engineering Technician will support the Engineering team in designing, building, testing, and improving new products, materials, and processes. This role involves hands‑on experimentation, equipment setup, data collection, and documentation to ensure that development projects are executed efficiently and accurately. The technician will work closely with engineers to bring innovative concepts from early prototypes to validated solutions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist in the design, assembly, and testing of prototypes, fixtures, and test setups.
- Prepare samples and conduct physical, chemical, or mechanical testing according to established and development protocols.
- Perform mechanical testing of test samples including operation and setup of computerized screw drive test machines under the supervision of the test area lead or Test Engineer.
- Operate laboratory and shop equipment (e.g., mixers, ovens, presses, environmental chambers, 3D printers, microscopes, etc.) to support experiments.
- Collect, record, and analyze test data.
- Assist in preparation of technical reports and summaries for engineering review.
- Collaborate with engineers and other technicians to refine designs and improve processes.
- Support scale‑up, process development, or technology transfer to manufacturing as required.
- Troubleshoot equipment, test methods, and prototypes during experimental work.
Help maintain laboratory/shop equipment, tools, and supplies in good working order. - Ensure compliance with safety standards, company policies, and quality procedures with guidance from Engineering.
- Use inspection devices (micrometer, caliper, optical comparator, etc.) to determine product compliance with engineering drawings and associated aerospace specifications.
- Maintain full documentation of test program through pictures, notes, tables, charts, and computer printouts.
- Correspond with colleagues and customers via email or program management software.
- Report immediately all suspicious and hazardous conditions to a supervisor.
- Other duties as requested or assigned.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision, be a self‑starter and be detail oriented.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Familiarity with materials testing, data collection, and laboratory practices.
- Speaks clearly and confidently in all situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions.
- Writes clearly and informatively; presents numerical data effectively.
- Able to read and interpret aerospace engineering drawings, schematics, procedures, and technical information.
Exhibits sound and accurate judgment and includes appropriate people in the decision‑making process. - Strong mechanical aptitude and hands‑on skills with tools, equipment, and instrumentation.
- Completes tasks on time or informs appropriate person of an alternate plan.
- Able to compute averages, standard deviations, ratios, and percentages with minimal assistance.
- Able to draw and interpret statistical charts and graphs with minimal assistance.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Solid Works, and/or other engineering and electronic drafting and modeling programs considered a positive asset but not required; experience with CAD or data analysis software is a plus.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to write routine reports and send correspondence.
- Adheres to written and verbal instructions, responds effectively to management direction, takes responsibility for personal actions, and consistently honors commitments.
- Ability to write and read English.
- Associate’s degree in engineering technology, mechanical/electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent hands‑on experience preferred and may be considered in lieu of education.
- 2+ years of relevant experience in a laboratory or prototyping environment preferred but not required.
- This is not a supervisory position.
