Chemical Process Engineer – Tech Services
Marathon Los Angeles Refinery – Carson, CA
The role provides technical support for plant operations. The engineer will monitor assigned units, troubleshoot issues, optimize processes, and design capital projects. Experience may lead to mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities- Provide troubleshooting and optimization assistance, maintaining unit mass balance within tolerance.
- Conduct routine performance monitoring – energy consumption, yields, and process health indicators – and act on findings.
- Identify opportunities to improve yield, energy efficiency, and reliability; plan tests and recommend projects.
- Conduct process operations analysis and economic evaluation using simulation or engineering calculations; secure approval with refinery management.
- Provide technical input for operating manuals, MOC, HAZOPs, and P&.
- Collaborate with economics team to align unit constraints with the plant’s linear programming model.
- Perform engineering activities across all project phases: feasibility, design, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Support operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to resolve challenges and maintain relationships with console and field operators.
- Participate in hazard evaluations, incident investigations, and process hazard analysis (PHA).
- Assist in coordinating turnarounds/outages, including scope development and post‑event evaluations.
- Maintain and update process documentation.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering (completed before start).
- At least 2 years of experience as a process engineer in oil and gas refining.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to wear appropriate PPE and perform field tasks; must pass hair drug test and physical.
- Physical ability to access all refinery areas, including use of stairs/ladders.
- Valid driver’s license (MPC determines validity).
- Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. with no future visa sponsorship required.
- Travel requirement 5% or less.
- 9/80 schedule; occasional after‑hours calls and TAR/outage support once a year. Rare off‑hours and extended hours may be required.
- More than 2 years of experience as a process engineer in oil and gas refining.
- Experience with Aspen HYSYS and PI Process Book.
