Job Description

DEPARTMENT:
Water, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for operating the Water Treatment Plant to ensure an adequate and safe water supply.

SCHEDULE:

Monday – Friday 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM

Major Duties
  • Controls treatment plant processes and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and industrial and commercial use.
  • Performs laboratory tests for water quality including pH, chlorine, fluoride, iron, manganese, turbidity, alkalinity, and hardness.
  • Collects bacteriological samples from sites in the distribution system for coliform analysis.
  • Preforms Jar Testing of raw water to optimize chemicals in the treatment process.
  • Records plant operation data.
  • Operates pumps and adjusts valves used in the treatment process.
  • Adds various chemicals as needed to water supply; mixes chemicals and changes chlorine cylinders.
  • Operates and controls various pumps and valves to regulate the flow of raw water into the treatment plant.
  • Performs inspections of plant operations for safety, maintenance, and proper process operations.
  • Maintains proper levels for all purified water storage reservoirs to ensure an adequate supply.
  • Repairs and maintains machines, equipment, pumps, and electrical equipment; calibrates equipment.
  • Maintains log of test results and various data.
  • Helps train newly hired operators.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required By The Position
  • Knowledge of water system operations.
  • Knowledge of the handling and application of chemicals necessary to maintain a safe water supply.
  • Knowledge of handling and containing hazardous chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations concerning safe drinking water.
  • Knowledge of water treatment plant operations.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in basic math and chemistry.
  • Skill in water treatment plant operation.
  • Skill in the use of water analysis equipment.
  • Skill in the use of maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
Supervisory Controls

The Water Treatment Plant Superintendent or Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include state Environmental Protection Division and federal Environmental Protection Agency drinking water guidelines, Occupational Safety and Health regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and standard operating practices. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.

Complexity

The work consists of related duties in water analysis and treatment.

Scope and Effect

The purpose of this position is to facilitate the operation of the water treatment plant. Successful performance in the position helps ensure a safe water supply.

Contacts are typically with co‑workers, other utility system personnel, and the general public.

Physical Demands

The work is typically performed while standing or walking. The employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

Work Environment

The work is performed in an office, laboratory, chemical storerooms, electrical and mechanical rooms, and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
