Job SummaryThis position is responsible for performing building and home inspections, public education, and origin and cause investigation in the City of Cartersville.
Major Duties- Inspect commercial buildings, public buildings, and residential dwellings for code compliance.
- Enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances.
- Inspect the storage of explosives and other flammable materials.
- Inspect and advise on the installation of fire alarms and fire extinguishing equipment.
- Report violations of fire‑safety laws to the Fire Marshal.
- Speak to civic groups and schools about fire safety and demonstrate safe use of fire extinguishers.
- Assist in developing fire codes.
- May assume the duties of Assistant Fire Marshal in his/her absence.
- Issue burning permits; firework permits and inspect sites.
- Investigate fires to determine origin and cause.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of fire codes, department operating procedures, building codes, and city ordinances.
- Knowledge of building construction.
- Knowledge of inspection methods.
- Knowledge of fire hazards.
- Knowledge of reporting procedures.
- Knowledge of principles and techniques of fire suppression and prevention.
- Knowledge of firefighting equipment.
- Knowledge of fire cause determination, preservation of evidence, and legal proceedings.
- Skill in reading blueprints and interpreting building plans.
- Skill in operating firefighting equipment.
- Skill in public relations.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
- Education and training equivalent to specialized training in the field plus basic high school education.
- Experience of three to five years in the fire profession or equivalent.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license for the required vehicle or equipment.
- Ability to meet National Fire Protection Association and Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act requirements.
The Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal assign work through general instructions. The supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of results.
GuidelinesInternational Fire Codes, National Fire Protection Association codes, Life Safety Codes, city codes and ordinances, departmental operating procedures and guidelines, state regulations, and Standard Fire Prevention Codes.
ComplexityThe work consists of fire prevention, inspection, and safety education duties with a variety of responsibilities contributing to job complexity.
Scope and EffectThe purpose of this position is to reduce fire risk by conducting inspections and recommending procedures to reduce unsafe conditions. Successful performance contributes to the safety of residents and department personnel.
Physical DemandsIntermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. Lifting light and heavy objects, climbing ladders, using tools or equipment requiring dexterity, and distinguishing between shades of color.
Work EnvironmentPerformed in an office, various buildings, and outdoors exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, and occasional inclement weather. Requires protective devices.
