TITLE: PARAMEDIC
DEPARTMENT: Operations
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt
SUPERVISED BY: Operations Supervisor
SUMMARY: Responds to emergency and non-emergency requests for ambulance service and administers pre-hospital and inter-facility medical care in accordance with approved company medical protocols, policies and procedures. Occasionally required to drive the emergency vehicle and operate a two-way radio. The Paramedic is the primary caregiver and is responsible for coordinating the clinical activities of the ambulance team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide patient care in accordance with company policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, directives and standards.
- Maintain working knowledge and proficiency of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and other standards of care specific to the employee’s level of certification.
- Respond to all assigned calls in an appropriate, safe and efficient manner.
- Complete required documentation, obtain appropriate signatures and submit documentation as required for each assigned call at the end of each shift.
- Efficiently utilize supplies and equipment according to departmental guidelines; operate all basic and advanced life support equipment; log in and out equipment; clean and restock units; report equipment damage to the Field Operations Supervisor.
- Maintain knowledge of local geography and the ability to read maps.
- Ensure the unit and equipment are kept clean, organized and ready; monitor fuel, fluids and tire pressure; report vehicle equipment issues per SOPs.
- Complete station duties and maintain crew quarters in a neat and serviceable condition.
- Perform duties in accordance with financial and operational plans and goals for cost effectiveness and efficient management.
- Attend work regularly and punctually.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 1 year experience as a field Paramedic
- Drivers must be at least 19 years of age
- Paramedic Certification - by the State of Georgia
- Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS)
- Valid State of Georgia Driver's License
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services
- Knowledge of local area EMS and public safety structure
- Knowledge of local, Federal and State insurance billing guidelines for ambulance services
- Ability to read English and understand medical terminology
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and complete forms
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, superiors, customers and other public service personnel
- Ability to present information and respond to questions regarding patient care and company operations
- Regularly use hands and fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear
- Stand and walk frequently; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch for extended periods
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 180 pounds and occasionally up to 300 pounds with assistance
- Various vision abilities required; depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- Transfer patients in a stair chair between floors with assistance
- Handle and transport medical bags and equipment to and from the ambulance
- Transfer a patient on a stretcher from ground to ambulance
- Operate stretcher release mechanisms with appropriate lifting requirements
- Ability to navigate stairs and work in multi-level environments
- Ability to work with patients in an ambulance at heights up to 68 inches and tolerate various temperatures and weather conditions
EMS work may expose employees to inclement weather, hazardous conditions, diseases and other illnesses. Frequent interruptions, work pressure and irregular schedules are expected. Occasional travel and unscheduled meetings may occur outside regular hours.
