Job Overview

The Prosthodontic department at Newcastle Dental Hospital delivers a varied range of routine and specialist dental treatment to a wide range of patients. Although our main focus is delivering prosthetic appliances to patients such as dentures, crowns and bridges, we also provide other conservation treatment within the restorative umbrella. We also deliver treatment and review patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, patients who meet NHS criteria for implants, and treat patients with moderate to advanced periodontal disease with our hygienists and carry out surgical procedures for Endodontics.

The prosthodontic clinic’s dental nursing team works alongside staff of varying experience and undergraduate students.

You may be required to work on other dental departments within the Dental Hospital to cover absences at certain times.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Registered Dental Nurse, you will provide high standards of clinical care and support to postgraduate and undergraduate clinicians as well as various staff grades under the management of the Senior Dental Nurse. Your responsibilities include preparing and maintaining clinical areas, managing stocks of materials and equipment, and collecting and inputting data into the patient administration system. You will work on Level 5 of the Dental Hospital within the Prosthodontic Clinic, covering various treatment and new patient consultation clinics, and you may also work across other areas of the Dental Hospital and additional dental units within the trust.

  • Provide chair‑side assistance (including patients treated under general anaesthetic) to all grades of dental staff and students.
  • Prepare all instruments, equipment and materials required for treatment.
  • Provide care and support for patients undergoing a variety of treatments.
  • Offer pre‑ and post‑operative instructions and advice, maintaining a high standard of patient care at all times.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality is always upheld.
  • Provide administrative assistance when liaising with patients and external agencies.
  • Provide clinical supervision and practical training to student dental nurses and less experienced staff daily.
