Clinical Fellow in Hepatology (ST3+ Equivalent)
Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks a dynamic and dedicated Clinical Fellow to join our hepatology services at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle. The role involves supervised management of inpatients and outpatients with liver disease, including complex liver cases and liver transplantation candidates, and participation in the out‑of‑hours registrar hepatology on‑call rota.
Job OverviewAs a crucial member of a high‑performing regional liver unit and Institute of Transplantation, you will contribute to clinical care, teaching, research and quality audit. The position offers comprehensive professional development in hepatology.
Responsibilities- Contribute to outpatient and inpatient specialist hepatology services, including the management of liver transplant recipients.
- Participate in the hepatology registrar out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1:8 schedule).
- Engage in audit and clinical governance activities related to hepatology in line with national guidance.
- Participate in departmental meetings and continuous professional development activities.
- Support student and foundation doctor teaching when required.
- Complete patient‑related administration as needed.
- Contribute constructively to departmental meetings and risk‑management activities.
- Essential:
Primary medical qualification, full GMC registration, MRCP. - Desirable:
Higher degree (MSc, MD, PhD).
- Essential:
Evidence of experience and commitment to hepatology, ability to work independently and as part of a team, good communication skills, NHS‑paid clinical experience. - Desirable:
Experience in managing complex liver disease, acute liver failure and liver transplantation, potential for independent quality‑improvement projects or research.
- Essential:
Written evidence of satisfactory training to date (e.g., workplace assessments).
- Essential:
Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students and foundation doctors. - Desirable:
Certificate or diploma in teaching.
- Essential:
Experience of audit projects.

Applicant requirementsApplicants must hold appropriate UK professional registration. A DBS certificate will be paid for by the Trust through a salary deduction from the first month’s pay. The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required.
