The Cary Arts Center is seeking a Senior Administrative Assistant to provide administrative and programming support for the Performing Arts Program!
This position will play an essential role in the supervision and administration of drama and dance programs, Applause! Cary Youth Theatre and performing arts special events. The role requires considerable initiative, independent leadership, and exceptional communication skills with a variety of stakeholders.
This role will require consistent daytime availability in March-August 2026, with occasional evening and weekend availability as needed.
Must be willing to occasionally work at The Hive in Western Cary, Cary Community Centers, and the Downtown Cary Park. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Performing Arts Program Specialist.
This is a seasonal, non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours.
- Email, telephone and/or personal contact with staff, instructors, and the public.
- Supervise, support, and coordinate drama and dance classes and summer camps.
- Produce summer Applause! Cary Youth Theatre mainstage production, including leading weekly production meetings, liaising with production staff to address questions and concerns, and managing tech and show week staff and rehearsals/performances.
- Communicate effectively with staff, instructors, program participants, and the public via email, phone, and in-person.
- Step in as drama instructor if needed, drawing on your teaching artist experience.
- Collaborate with staff to support program marketing and special events.
- Maintain program documentation and participant records for summer camps (i.e. camper registration and medical information).
- Assist with various aspects of Performing Arts Program, such as scheduling substitute instructors, generating ideas for future classes, and assisting in the planning of future performing arts programming seasons.
- Assist with computer-related tasks in town programs.
- Perform other job-related tasks as needed.
- Extensive knowledge of educational theatre best practices, performance styles, and classroom management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of common office procedures and equipment, especially computers and related software, specifically Microsoft Office Suite and program registration software.
- Ability to remain organized, multitask, and work independently.
- Ability to complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with the public and coworkers tactfully and constructively.
- Ability to design an educational philosophy that focuses on a student-centered approach prioritizing theatre as an artform, safety, and fun.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to acquire technical knowledge of Cary’s policies, procedures and the services of the department.
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre, Musical Theatre, Theatre for Youth, Theatre Education, or related field AND at least 3 years of experience teaching drama in a recreational and/or non-profit settings and current theatre administration experience.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:
- At least 3 years of drama teaching experience.
- At least 1 year of theatre administration experience.
- Some experience with managing time-oriented projects that are both computer and in person based.
- Extensive background in theatre (at least 4 years) with experience in acting/performance, stage management, directing, and/or theatre production in community, recreational, and/or professional theatre companies.
- Some experience in theatre education program development.
Work in this class will be a combination of physical work and sedentary in an office environment. Work requires the ability to see, hear, lift, talk, and the ability to perform the tasks listed above. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment. Visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and operate a computer terminal.
Conditionsof Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
