POSITION SUMMARY:
In partnership with Wake Tech Community College Early Childhood Apprenticeship program,and under the supervision of the Program Director,the Youth Counselor Apprentice is responsible for leading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants inassignedprogram.
Theyare responsible for managing thesefunctionsinaccordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.
After School program locations may include:
Kingswood, Laurel Park, Morrisville, Northwoods, and Salem Elementary schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises and builds relationships witha group of elementary and/or middle school students.
- Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentallyappropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.
- Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe,friendly and challenging.
- Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children inthe program.
- Models andfacilitatesrelationship-building skills in all interactionsandmaintainspositiverelationships with campers, parents, schoolstaffand other YMCA staff.
- Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abusepreventionand emergency management.
- Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.
- Attends staff meetings andtrainings.
- Develops andmaintainscollaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication withinareaof responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be currently enrolled in Wake Tech’sApprenticeship program and selectedtoparticipatebycollege administration guidelines.
- Previous experience working with children or teenspreferredbutnotrequired.
- Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.
- Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Multi-lingual desired but ourquired.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Ability to plan,leadandparticipatein a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range, or special accommodations made ofsufficientnature for completion of assigned tasks.
- Ability to communicate clearly through speech and understanding of the English language.
- Ability to walk, run, stand, kneel,stoop,and manual dexterity.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
- Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.
- Travel between branch and/or site locations may be necessary.
