Manager, Textile Chemistry Research

This position is responsible for generating and executing applied research projects in the field of finishing research in-line with Cotton Incorporated’s mission and with a focus on sustainability. This position will also be responsible for managing projects and timelines, presenting on research findings, and networking with mills and manufacturers to troubleshoot issues in the field of textile wet processing.

• Generate research ideas in alignment with Cotton Incorporated’s mission, focusing on sustainability.
• Develop new formulas, processes, and related technology that will help maintain and increase cotton market share.
• Develop practical processing formulations, procedures and samples that effectively translate from lab to production.
• Compile, evaluate, record and report data in a well‑written, concise manner.
• Learn to safely operate a variety of applicators and machinery.
• Manage multiple projects/experiments at a time, ensuring deadlines are met.
• Develop joint research and commercialization projects as needed.
• Present research findings and new developments to various audiences.
• Develop and maintain working relationships with dyestuff suppliers, chemical suppliers and mills.
• Utilize industry contacts to find new chemicals and applications to enhance cotton at the right price.
• Produce research reports, technical bulletins, journal articles and informal briefs.
• Collaborate with internal departments on projects and initiatives.
• Provide tours of the facility to a wide variety of audiences.
• Provide lectures and support of training classes related to field of expertise both in‑house and externally.
• Participate in industry and association meetings to keep abreast of technical developments.
• Participate in internal Spill Team (must become respirator certified) and weekly safety meetings.
• Inform supervisor of developments that would affect corporate objectives.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area (including equipment and assigned lab areas).
• Provide technical service as needed.

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, or Polymer & Color Chemistry.
• 10-15+ years dyeing and finishing industry experience (past experience working at a textile dye house, dye company, or chemical company preferred).
• Research‑minded professional who can develop a designed experiment, assemble the chemistry, equipment, and fabric needed to conduct the experiment, and execute the experiment.
• Ability to work in multiple laboratories on a daily basis to carry out research experiments.
• Creative and strong idea generator with professional enthusiasm.
• Expert knowledge of wet processing as it relates to preparation, bleaching, dyeing, and finishing.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to write concise technical reports, without omitting relevant details.
• Ability to coordinate and cooperate with associates from all Company teams.
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
• Ability to compile and conduct professional presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
• Ability to comply with internal protocols for chemical management.
• Strong interpersonal skills to coordinate and collaborate with internal and external contacts.
• Self‑motivated, team player.
• Ability to manage part‑time or full‑time staff on an as‑needed basis.
• This position requires domestic and international travel up to 20% of the time.

• Involvement with and exposure to various equipment, chemicals, and instruments.
• Periods of high noise levels and temperatures up to 110°F.
• (Seasonal) warmer work areas.
• Varied working conditions off‑site due to travel.
  
  Frequent sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, and occasional moderate to heavy lifting (up to 60 lbs.).
• Use of eye and hearing protection as well as protective wear as required by chemical SDS.
• Frequent phone and face‑to‑face contact with internal/external contacts at all levels.
• Required personal protection devices to be worn including but not limited to: safety glasses, lab coat, ear plugs, gloves, aprons, face shields, fitted respirator, and goggles.
