Position: Automotive Technician I

A typical day for the Auto Technician I consists of the servicing and maintenance of all light to medium duty vehicles and small equipment. The types of vehicles will be Explorers, half-ton to one-ton pickup trucks, and sedans. Types of equipment will range from skid steers, backhoes, and UTVs. These will all be scheduled and assigned daily by the Fleet Service Writer.

The ideal candidate will have outstanding customer service and knowledge pertaining to engines, drive trains, heating and air conditioning systems, and servicing.

Hours of Operation

8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

Incumbents are responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment in the Municipal Fleet.

Reporting Structure

Receives direct supervision from higher-level supervisory and management staff.

Responsibilities
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment to include oil changes, tire inspection, fluids, etc. may utilize computerized diagnostics.
  • May be assigned to the Municipal Golf Course to perform regular maintenance and repairs on the golf course fleet throughout the season.
  • Performs mechanical repairs and overhaul work on various types of light equipment such as mowers and power tools in addition to light to heavy duty vehicles and trucks. May assist with heavy equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, graders, dump trucks, tractors, paving equipment, street sweepers, snow plows and other types of municipal fleet.
  • Basic fabrication and repairs on metal parts using welding equipment.
  • Enters daily service notes on work orders including parts and supplies used in vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Assists other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
  • Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Knowledge
    • Customer Service principles.
    • Proper use of basic tools and equipment.
    • Basic engine repair techniques.
    • Basic automotive maintenance and repair principles and practices.
    • Basic welding techniques.
    • Basic recording keeping principles and practices.

    • Learn the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
    • Learn to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.
    • Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

    Education and Experience
