Community Health Educator

Conducts health education and advocacy in assigned program areas around chronic diseases, immunizations, injuries, tobacco control, and behavioral health with community partners to support policy change and other population-based prevention activities.

We are hiring two Community Health Educators to join the Douglas County Health Department in the Community Health Division:

  • Tobacco control in Elbert County:
    This position will conduct health education and policy advocacy in assigned program areas around tobacco control with community partners in Elbert County to support policy change and other population-based prevention activities.
  • Immunizations in Douglas County:
    This position will conduct health education and policy advocacy in assigned program areas around vaccine preventable diseases, including COVID-19, with community partners to support policy change and other population-based prevention activities.

Generally, the hiring range is $52,898-$66,123 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participatesincommunity coalitions,partnerships, and collaborations tosupport and advance work, including youth coalitions and youth-adult partnerships.
  • Developsandfosterspartnerships withavarietyofpartnersandstakeholders.
  • Provideseducationandtrainingtokeystakeholders onselected health topics. Participates in community assessment processes.
  • Workswithkeystakeholders and community-basedpartnersto advocateforhealth-related policies on the local level.
  • Provideseducation, resources, andrelatedsupporttocitystaffandlocalelected officials.
  • Supports community-basedand governmental organizations such as schools, housingauthorities,workplaces, parksandrecreationdepartments anddistricts, non-profits, andothers in development of organizationalpolicies that promote health.
  • Uses assessment data and evidence-based practice guidelines to make recommendations for strategies to improve the public health policy landscape, considering the varied needs of specific populations, such as issues related to age, gender, culture, and health disparities.
  • Supportscommunityeducationeffortsincludingmassmediacampaigns, social media, community outreach events.
  • Workswithotherteammemberstoensureconsistentmessaging incommunities and across the agency.
  • Provides education, both internally and externally, to raise awareness and understanding ofchronicdiseases,tobacco,injuries,and/or behavioralhealth.
  • Participates inimplementationof

    DCHD’s Strategic Planasitrelatestochronic disease, tobacco prevention, substance abuse, and/or behavioral health.
  • Participates inprogram development, grant writing, andgrant implementation includingprogramworkplansandbudgets.

    Participates inthetimelycompletion of applicable grant progress reports and other documentation as required.
  • Collaborates withprogramevaluators indatacollectionandotherevaluation related activities.
  • Participatesinrelevantgranteemeetingsandtrainingsasrequiredbyfunders.
  • Mayparticipate on department-wide cross-divisionalwork groupsand projects.
  • Represents the Departmentoncommunityprevention committees andother relevant groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires abachelor’s degreefromanaccredited collegeoruniversity withmajor coursework in public health, health promotion, health communication, social work, education, ora related field. Master's Preferred.
  • Requires aminimum of two years of related work experience.
  • An equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to effectively perform the functions of this position may be considered.
