- Deliver in-person courses in the classroom and field on:
- forest health, focusing on identifying forest pathogens and insects
- disturbance ecology, with an emphasis on fire and climate change
- management of regionally significant invasive species
- ecology, management and classification of riparian, wetland and alpine/subalpine ecosystems using standard BC systems
- ecological function of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and identification of zooplankton, native and invasive macrophytes, and riparian flora
- preparation of ecosystem-based management prescriptions and restoration plans
- apply ecosystem restoration principles to applied projects
- technical communication including reports and oral presentations
- common sampling procedures in terrestrial, littoral and riparian environments
- technical skillsets, including using mobile field apps (e.g., Avenza, Survey 123, etc.) and using Excel to compile, explore, manage and display data accurately
- Ensure effective safety procedures are applied as appropriate, particularly in field labs
- Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning
- Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students
- Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participate in school and in all relevant program meetings
- Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures
- Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff
- Protect student information
- Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean
- Recent, applied experience with:
- Standard wetland, aquatic and riparian sampling techniques used in BC
- Ecology of and management of ecosystems in BC
- Ecological restoration
- Familiarity with applicable BC legislation
- Safety standards as applied to field and lab settings
- Sound understanding of fundamentals of terrestrial ecology, and management of
- Demonstrated ability of the following:
- in-person course delivery experience
- previous use of a learning management system like Moodle
- work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities
- teaching students at the post‑secondary level
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills
- Excellent classroom management skills
- Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives
- Provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their community and in our agile world
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Strong competencies in working independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to continuous learning
- Master of Science degree in Ecology or related field
- Member of relevant professional association (e.g., RPBio), or immediately eligible
- Two to three years’ teaching experience in a post‑secondary environment
- Industry ecosystem restoration and management experience is desired
- Experience working with and among Indigenous communities preferred
- Applicants with lesser education or experience may be considered for the available position
- Valid driver’s license – class4 preferred
This is a short‑term, part‑time position (22%) covering a leave, commencing August
24,2026, and ending December
28,2026 or upon the return of the incumbent. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12–$4,341.23 bi‑weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles
5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
