Job Description & How to Apply Below
We’re a locally owned, community-minded pet store looking for an experienced aquarist who is also an excellent customer service person. Someone who can talk fish and water chemistry one minute, help a new pet parent choose the right food the next, and ring through a purchase with a smile.
If you’re the person your friends call when their aquarium has cloudy water, algae problems, or a fish that isn’t looking quite right—we’d love to meet you!
What You’ll Do Greet customers, listen to their needs and provide friendly, knowledgeable advice
Help customers choose the right products for their pets
Build relationships and create a customer experience that keeps people coming back
Operate the cash register and help with general store duties
Aquatics Provide knowledgeable advice on freshwater aquariums, fish, plants, equipment and water care
Help customers with fish selection, compatibility, stocking, cycling, acclimation and aquarium maintenance
Test water and troubleshoot common aquarium problems
Maintain clean, healthy and attractive aquariums, including water changes and routine maintenance
Monitor fish health and water conditions and recognize potential problems
Maintain accurate livestock information, pricing and inventory
The Store Keep shelves, displays and aquariums clean, organized and appealing
Stay up to date on promotions, products and loyalty programs
Learn about our other pet categories and help wherever needed
Work as part of a team to keep the store running smoothly
What We’re Looking For Solid hands-on aquarium experience and knowledge
Previous retail and customer service experience
Strong communication and listening skills
Confidence discussing aquarium care, fish, equipment and water quality
Ability to troubleshoot common aquarium issues
A genuine interest in helping people and their pets
Friendly, positive attitude and a willingness to jump in and help
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and holidays
Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as stocking and aquarium maintenance
Experience with other pets is a bonus! Knowledge of dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, small animals or farm animals is always welcome. Why Blue Barn? We’re a locally owned business—not a big chain—and we care about our customers, our communities and our team.
We offer:
Extended health benefits
Free monthly pet food
Training and opportunities to learn
Opportunities for advancement
A supportive team of people who genuinely love pets
Ready to Join Us? If you’re an experienced aquarist who also knows what great customer service looks like, we want to hear from you.
We’re looking for someone who knows fish—but more importantly, someone who knows people.
