Position Summary

The Department of Engineering and Technology at Southern Utah University (SUU) invites applications for a faculty position within the Mechanical Engineering program at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor.

This is a full-time faculty position to begin in Fall 2026 and is open to candidates with either:

  • A Master's degree (for a non‑tenure‑track appointment).
  • A Ph.D. (for a tenure‑track appointment) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Or a closely related field at one of the ranks above.

The position will be at the SUU campus in Cedar City, Utah. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment and ability to teach at the undergraduate level. This position includes benefits that may include relocation expenses to hired candidates for on‑site employment.

Essential Functions
  • Teaching and Student Mentorship:
    • Teach undergraduate engineering courses with a focus on effective teaching strategies and a student-centered learning environment.
    • Tenure‑Track Faculty:
      Teach 24 credit hours per year (typically four 3‑credit courses per semester).
    • Non‑Tenure‑Track Faculty:
      Teach 30 credit hours per year (typically five 3‑credit courses per semester).
    • Instruction is generally expected to be in a face‑to‑face format.
    • Mentor and advise students to support their academic success and professional development.
    • Provide quality educational experiences for all students.
  • Research and Scholarly Activity (Tenure‑Track):
    • Conduct scholarly activity (required for tenure/tenure-track appointments).
    • Engage collaboratively with students and/or peers on scholarly activity.
    • Produce work that results in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Program Development and Curriculum:
    • Play an active role in advancing and shaping the growth of the Mechanical Engineering program.
    • Contribute with a specific focus on manufacturing and/or robotics‑mechatronics.
    • Develop relevant courses and foster curriculum alignment within the Department of Engineering and Technology.
    • Work collaboratively to ensure programs remain flexible, innovative, and responsive to student and industry needs.
    • Actively participate and collaborate with the department to enhance and maintain a robust curriculum based on continual program evaluation from:
    • Internal review
    • Industry advisory board feedback
    • Student feedback
    • Accreditation review input
  • Fully participate in accreditation review and continuous improvement activities.
  • Note:

    Experience with ABET accreditation of Engineering programs is a plus.
Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Robotics‑Mechatronics, or a closely related field (degree determines whether appointment is non‑tenure‑track or tenure‑track).
  • Ability to deliver quality instruction for undergraduate mechanical engineering courses.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal‑relationship, and leadership skills.
  • Evidence of research/scholarly activity for tenure‑track applicants.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in one or more undergraduate Mechanical Engineering topic areas, particularly in:
    • Manufacturing processes and systems
    • Mechatronics and robotics systems
    • Mechanical design and prototyping
    • Dynamics, control, and automation of mechanical systems
    • Embedded systems, sensors, and instrumentation for robotics Emerging technologies such as autonomous systems, smart manufacturing, and AI‑driven robotics.
    • Experience with ABET accreditation of engineering programs.
    • Industry experience relevant to manufacturing and/or robotics‑mechatronics is highly desired.
    • Experience with design, prototyping, and testing of mechanical or robotic systems.
