Position

We are hiring an Irrigation Technician to perform skilled labor with a major emphasis in irrigation maintenance, installation, plumbing, and electrical repair. Duties include operation of the central control irrigation system, general park duties at related City facilities, and collaboration with outside contractors and vendors.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and program the Hunter Irrigation Central Control computer system, making seasonal adjustments based on weather and field conditions.
  • Conduct irrigation inspections and audits, typically 2–3 times per calendar year.
  • Maintain and repair over 6,000 sprinklers, thousands of feet of drip line and drift emitters, and irrigation pipe and fittings.
  • Repair leaks within 24 hours; staff typically repairs 3–4 leaks per week.
  • Inspect and repair irrigation clocks, satellites, gate and ball valves, valve boxes, RPZ and backflow devices, and irrigation electrical systems.
  • Apply backflow device testing, requiring Training and License (Irrigation Tech II).
  • Plan and implement water conservation practices, including seasonal adjustment of run times and use of weather stations.
  • Maintain detailed blueprints, diagrams, and “as‑built” records for all City irrigation systems and record water usage data.
  • Design and install irrigation systems and provide technical expertise to outside contractors, vendors, gardeners, volunteers, and City staff.
  • Locate irrigation wire and pipe using specialized equipment and follow all state and county guidelines.
  • Operate necessary equipment for installation and maintenance of irrigation systems on City property, input tasks into the Lucity Work Order program, and order all required parts and tools.
  • Perform construction surveying, maintenance of water fountains, toilets, sinks, and sewer facilities.
  • Prepare fountains and community gardens for cold weather to prevent freeze damage, clear clogged drains, and test electricity at all park facilities before rentals.
  • Repair electrical outlets, light fixtures, ballast, hand dryers, and motion sensors; install and repair irrigation electrical components, including two‑wire systems.
  • Calibrate and apply fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide, keeping accurate records of applications.
  • Change all door locks and hardware annually at tennis courts and other park facilities.
  • Coordinate, lead, and participate in preparing grounds for planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and pruning vegetation.
  • Mow, propagate, and trim grass and brush; help train other employees in proper care and maintenance.
  • Keep the foreman informed regularly on job status and watch for pests, disease, or other deteriorating agents, ensuring eradication.
  • Operate necessary vehicles and tools, including pickup truck, chainsaw, carpentry tools, and garden tools, and maintain safety standards in the Parks and Recreation shop.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
