Our CAAS practice is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our growing construction industry team, based out of either our Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, IA office location.

As a member of CLA’s CAAS practice, you will provide accounting services to CLA’s construction industry clients in the local city area and will be a key part of our client service teams. You will work directly with clients to provide customized accounting and finance services to support them as they grow their business. This full‑time, long‑term opportunity provides fractional accounting/finance services to multiple CLA clients.

Job Responsibilities
  • Complete construction AIA draw process, either manually or with software.
  • Complete lien waiver verification and insurance verification.
  • Track development project expenses including hard and soft costs, month‑over‑month totals, stored materials, retainage, etc.
  • Complete non‑complex and some complex account reconciliations and record transactions as part of the monthly, quarterly, and annual adjusting and closing process.
  • Apply GAAP (FASB/SFAS) related to our clients’ specific industries.
  • Prepare and review the general ledger, financial statements and required work papers.
  • Assist with preparing and reviewing financial and statistical reports, analyzing for unusual items and notifying team leaders when necessary.
  • Prepare and review payroll and payroll tax reporting.
  • Assist annually with preparation for the independent auditors.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the financial operations of industry specific engagements (nonprofit, healthcare, manufacturing, etc.).
  • Identify accounting errors, research technical issues, and proactively resolve issues.
  • Assist with projects related to due diligence, system selection, and other consulting.
Required Education/Experience/Abilities
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree required. Combination of related experience, education, and training may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience:

    4 years as a Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, Senior Auditor or equivalent; relevant construction industry experience highly preferred.
  • Heavy user of accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Quick Books, Intacct, , Expensify, Fathom, etc.).
  • CPA preferred, but not required.
  • Travel:
    Frequent local travel to/from client sites; occasional non‑local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings or other business purposes.
