Overview
National Consultant Relations Executive at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The role focuses on consultant engagement, building and maintaining relationships with employer benefit consultants, and aligning strategy with Sales Directors, Sales Team Leaders, and SMEs to drive market impact.
Responsibilities- Dedicated focus on broad consultant relations; act as the central hub for consultant engagement.
- Collaborate with internal teams (sales, operations, competitive intelligence, underwriting, product, claims, customer service) to align delivery of Wellmark’s product and services with client goals.
- Develop and manage processes to distribute important information and insights to consulting houses and consultants, including legislative/regulatory updates and new market solutions.
- Participate in BCBS Association and Consortium work groups to stay connected to strategic initiatives and apply knowledge for Wellmark’s benefit.
- Influence the Consortium on information conveyed to national consultants about Wellmark/Blues value, discounts, and service capabilities.
- Proactively manage consultant relationships to understand their value proposition and business plans related to customers; ensure alignment with Wellmark’s value proposition and roadmap.
- Coordinate and attend broker/consultant/events; lead creation and maintenance of materials educating consultants on Wellmark capabilities.
- Work with Sales, Product, and Operations to maintain and develop products/services that differentiate Wellmark in the marketplace.
- Apply subject matter expertise to grow existing broker/consultant relationships and generate referrals for new business.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Required:
- Bachelor's Degree or direct and applicable work experience.
- 10+ years of related professional experience, five of which with employer benefit consultants.
- Currently possess or will acquire a health and life insurance license for Iowa and South Dakota within 60 days of starting.
- Strong knowledge of insurance products/services, funding arrangements, government regulations, healthcare cost drivers/trends, cost management, competitive landscape.
- Experience translating corporate strategy into actionable, measurable results; strategic planning to enhance sales performance.
- Proven sales experience with a track record of success; experience selling customizable solutions; coaching/mentoring sales teams.
- Formal or informal leadership experience with strong leadership competencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; strong presentation skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft PowerPoint; ability to establish matrixed partnerships and follow through on expectations.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to travel overnight up to 60% (locations may extend beyond Iowa and South Dakota); valid driver’s license required.
- Preferred:
- Extensive experience with self-funded health insurance.
- Existing national, regional, and local health insurance consultant relationships.
- Continued education within the healthcare field.
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy benefits.
- Life and Health Insurance license required within 60 days of hire; travel 50–60%.
- Develop a broad network of contacts across local, regional, and national consulting houses; maintain relationships through regular communication, meetings, and presentations.
- Collaborate with internal teams to align delivery of Wellmark’s products with client goals; serve as primary contact to resolve high-impact issues with consultants.
- Create and manage processes to distribute insights to consultants, including regulatory updates, market solutions, vendor details, and trainings.
- Engage with BCBS Association and Consortium initiatives; convey Wellmark’s value and gather value for membership; influence what information is shared with national consultants.
