General Description
The Construction Manager (CM) position is responsible for overseeing all construction activities of FQPT’s systems at various client locations. The CM leads project execution from pre‑construction through closure and final customer acceptance, managing the project budget and ensuring projects are on or ahead of their planned timeline.
Role and Responsibilities- Provide full construction oversight of each project from pre‑construction to close‑out.
- Prioritize site/project safety and enforce all safety policies.
- Make critical decisions to ensure project success.
- Read and understand P&’s, CAD and structural steel drawings and address engineering issues pre‑construction.
- Execute projects within budget and timeline in collaboration with the Project Manager.
- Hold contractors accountable during all project phases.
- Perform constructability design reviews, support system start‑ups, and maintain up‑to‑date as‑built drawings.
- Execute Construction QA/QC protocols such as rotation checks, megger reports, and other QA checks.
- Participate in purchasing activities, coordinate inspections, and manage local building inspector interactions.
- Coordinate responses from the Engineering group and maintain a high quality work environment.
- Identify and analyze construction problems, taking timely corrective action.
- Effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
- Plan proactively to foresee potential roadblocks and mitigate issues.
- Develop and manage construction budget/timeline, accurately projecting costs and completion estimates.
- Read and understand P&’s and detailed construction drawings.
- Negotiate contracts/contractors (must).
- Mitigate changes and scope creep via client requests.
- Apply mechanical aptitude for system start‑ups, maintenance oversight, and troubleshooting.
- Understand detailed civil (site and soil prep, concrete/rebar, structural steel) for industrial projects.
- Possess knowledge of piping, electrical, and automation (instrumentation wiring and installation).
- Inspect field conditions to identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost‑saving opportunities.
- Manage document control and review new issue drawings and contract documents for changes.
- Professional conduct at all times, even during challenges.
- Win‑win conflict resolution on the project site.
- Maintain high productivity during major changes.
- Remove performance barriers for project success.
- Define short‑ and long‑term resource requirements per project.
- Make tough decisions and take appropriate actions.
- Establish open lines of communication.
- Communicate best practices internally and externally.
- Construction Management experience required.
- Engineering degree with chemical or bio‑refining experience and at least 10 years in lump‑sum engineering‑construction preferred.
- Strong knowledge of cost engineering, mechanical system check‑out, start‑up, commissioning, training, safety oversight, and general operations setup.
- Proven leadership and management of people, client relations, delegation, planning, organization, problem solving, conflict resolution, high safety standards, and contractor motivation.
- Set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity.
Travel up to 100% is expected; expenses are reimbursed directly to the employee.
LocationPosition is flexible; occasional time at the Cedar Rapids office is required.
