Systems Safety Engineer

Job Summary

A Systems Safety Engineer is needed to understand, guide, and document the demonstration of safety for Positive Train Control, Dispatch, and related systems in Wabtec’s Digital Intelligence portfolio for both internal and external customers. The applicant will be responsible for compiling documentation required for certification as defined by CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C, and/or CENELEC EN 50126, 50128, and 50129 as appropriate.

Required activities include hazard identification, generation of detailed fault trees, occasional development of FMEAs, and completion of risk assessments. All failure rate data derived from the completion of these activities needs to be established and justified. Adherence to formal processes will be required, although continuous process improvements are encouraged. The candidate will work in a team environment and will receive mentoring and guidance from senior engineers.

• Safety analysis and documentation of systems under development for hazardous conditions
• Understand architecture requirements for high‑integrity computing solutions
• Develop system‑level failure analysis reports
• Build fault trees that reflect the identified hazards and mitigations
• Advise development team toward product certification under CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C and CENELEC EN 50126, 50128 and 50129, as applicable.
• Four‑year STEM degree from an accredited college/university
• 0‑2 years related engineering experience (internships considered)
• Attention to detail; approaches work in a meticulous and thorough manner
• Makes effective decisions by analyzing information and considering priorities
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Self‑motivated, results oriented, with a clear focus on quality and on time delivery
• Effectively manages transitions between projects/tasks
• Ability to support 5‑10% travel
• Experience in Python or in coding in C and derivative languages is a plus.

• Compile a portion or all of the documentation required for certification.
• Conduct hazard identification and generate detailed fault trees.
• Develop FMEAs and complete risk assessments.
• Establish and justify failure rate data from activities.
• Adhere to formal processes while encouraging continuous process improvements.
• Work collaboratively in a team environment and receive mentoring from senior engineers.
• May be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, with adequate training provided.
