Assistant District Engineer – District 6
Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 4:30 PM; overtime may be required. Flexible schedule allowed.
Job OverviewThe Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is seeking a passionate and driven Transportation Engineer Executive (TEE) to lead a multidisciplinary team and partner with stakeholders to enhance safety, operations, maintenance, and engineering across the primary road system.
Responsibilities- Oversee project development, land survey, right‑of‑way activities, traffic operations and safety improvement, access/utility permitting, and engineering support for state and federal highways in District 6.
- Communicate with the public, media, legislators, contracting and utility representatives, consulting engineers, local governments, and other state agencies.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with district and DOT staff to ensure programs and projects meet federal, state, and customer requirements.
- Direct staff activities to ensure timely, cost‑effective development and construction of transportation improvements.
- Provide leadership to approximately 16 permanent employees, including licensed professional engineers, engineering technicians, land surveyors, and support staff.
- Licensure as a professional engineer.
- Six years full‑time professional experience in transportation or civil engineering, including one year of supervisory/managerial responsibilities.
- Minimum of five years full‑time experience plus a master’s degree in civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering (or a closely related field).
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with one year in a Transportation Engineer Administrator role.
- Active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
- A valid Class C driver’s license.
- Specific knowledge of engineering principles related to highway design, structures, drainage, survey, and traffic engineering.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
