Full Time Cedar Rapids, IA, US
Salary Range: $80,000.00 To $ Annually
At BSI Engineering, our Structural Engineers do more than perform calculations. They help solve complex, real-world challenges for industrial clients, taking projects from existing-condition investigation and structural analysis through design, construction, and startup. As a key member of our Civil/Structural team, you'll design and evaluate steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structures while collaborating with engineers and designers across multiple disciplines. You'll have the opportunity to get into the field, understand how existing facilities actually function, develop practical engineering solutions, and see your designs become reality.
If you're a Structural Engineer who enjoys challenging projects, technical problem-solving, and having meaningful ownership of your work, this could be a great next step.
Responsibilities:
As a Structural Engineer, you'll take ownership of structural engineering efforts on industrial projects while working closely with designers, project managers, clients, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.
You will:
- Perform structural analysis and design for steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood structures.
- Develop engineering calculations and structural designs for new construction, modifications, expansions, and existing facilities.
- Visit client sites to inspect existing structures, gather field information, and evaluate existing conditions.
- Analyze existing structures and develop practical solutions for challenging field and project conditions.
- Perform structural analysis using RISA-3D and other applicable engineering tools.
- Work closely with structural designers to translate engineering direction into coordinated models and construction documents.
- Coordinate structural designs with mechanical, electrical, process, architectural, civil, and other project disciplines.
- Develop engineering studies, design criteria, scopes of work, project notes, and closeout documentation.
- Select appropriate structural systems, construction materials, and design approaches based on project requirements.
- Coordinate with geotechnical engineers, contractors, vendors, and other outside consultants.
- Support projects during construction, startup, and commissioning, including responding to field conditions and construction questions.
- Review designs and deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, quality, and compliance with applicable codes and client standards.
- Manage the engineering schedule and budget for your assigned scope.
- Communicate directly with clients and project teams to work through technical issues and keep projects moving.
- When appropriately licensed, review and seal structural design packages within your area of responsibility.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a Structural Engineer who is comfortable moving between analysis, design, coordination, and the field
. You understand the calculations, but you also understand that a successful design must work in a real facility and coordinate with everything around it.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of structural engineering experience designing structures using steel, concrete, masonry, and/or wood.
- Strong structural analysis and engineering calculation experience.
- Experience with RISA-3D or comparable structural analysis software.
- Working knowledge of applicable structural codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC, and NDS, as applicable to project scope.
- Ability to evaluate structural systems and select appropriate materials and design approaches.
- Experience coordinating structural engineering with other disciplines.
- Ability and willingness to visit client and project sites to evaluate existing conditions.
- Strong communication, technical judgment, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
, or progress toward obtaining one. - Structural engineering experience within industrial, manufacturing, process, pharmaceutical, chemical, food and beverage, or other complex facilities.
- Experience evaluating and modifying existing structures, not just designing new construction.
- Experience with structural finite element analysis and 3D analysis/modeling.
- Experience leading the structural scope of…
