The Switchgear Technician works with a team of builders and the Engineering/Design staff to produce quality electrical switch gear equipment. The Technician is responsible for assembling switch gear cabinets, subassemblies, panel boards, and systems:
Follows mechanical layout drawings, wiring diagrams, sample assemblies, and receives verbal instructions. Position and align components in specified relationship to each other using bolts, screws, and crimp terminals to secure parts in place, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment. Connect busbars and cables between various components, connectors, or terminals. Install breakers, drives, and other finished assemblies into enclosures.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or GED equivalent from an accredited institution required.
- 1-3 years of experience with wiring electricity and electronics is preferred.
- Experience with blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and point to point drawings is preferred.
- Must be dedicated, hardworking, focused, and have a high attention to detail.
- Must enjoy teamwork, learning, variety, and working with your hands.
- Must be able to perform repetitive work while maintaining high standards of quality.
- Good eye-hand coordination is required.
- Must have great color vision and the ability to identify wires by color.
- Hand dexterity is important, as small parts may need to be assembled.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Assemble switch gear cabinets, subassemblies, panel boards, and systems per mechanical layout drawings, wiring diagrams, sample assemblies, and/or verbal instructions.
- Use both standard tools like drills, screwdrivers, and torque wrenches as well as specialized tools such as hydraulic presses, cable strippers, power lug crimpers, wire marking machines, etc., typical for industrial automation assembly.
- Learn the functionality of all common components and their proper use.
- Safely operate a variety of tools and machinery in the assembly of products.
- Capable of utilizing highly automated equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain professional behavior and proper communication with internal and external contacts, including company employees, managers, and outside vendors.
- Show understanding of the details of assembly drawings.
- Comply with all safety work procedures.
- Successfully complete requested training classes and maintain all necessary safety certificates.
- Keep work area clean, organized, and hazard free.
- Effectively utilize the Microsoft office suite.
- Work in a team environment.
- Effectively manage time and follow directions.
- Check and respond to all company communications on all scheduled workdays, including voice mail, emails, and text messages. Make sure that old voice mails are cleared regularly so that the mailbox does not get full.
- Comply with all applicable company safety requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Working in a shop environment and must follow all safety, housekeeping, and organizational policies.
- Able to sit and work at computer keyboard or workstation for extended period.
- Able to stand for long periods and have significant physical stamina.
- Able to lift, push, pull, and move up to 60 pounds.
- Able to climb stairs, work at heights.
- Maintain regular and on-time attendance. Position is 40 hours per week but may exceed 40 hours per week.
