About the Division of Youth ServicesThe Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21, who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed.
The Division also contracts with numerous private residential and non‑residential service providers throughout the State.

Job Description Work ScheduleSunday‑Saturday, flexible shifts, possible weekends. Hours to be determined during interview and based on facility needs.
Purpose of This PositionDeliver health care to detained, pre‑trial, and committed youth. Primary care is provided by licensed independent practitioners/Mid‑Level Providers with responsibility for a continuum of health care from initial assessment through development and maintenance of health care including physical, psychiatric, and dental maintenance.
Responsibilities- Serve as the facility responsible health authority (RHA) and supervise health screens, appraisals, and physical exams of all admitted youth.
- Ensure timely detection of communicable diseases and take appropriate action to prevent their spread; report to the CDC/State Health Department as required.
- Act as the lead decision maker during emergency medical situations and approve and monitor treatment plans.
- Oversee pharmacy orders, coordinate all medical, dental, and mental health care with outside providers, and manage prior authorizations.
- Participate in and represent medical staff on facility committees (e.g., management, mental health, safety).
- Lead medical liaison with the mental health team; supervise and train staff on mental status evaluation and referral processes.
- Coordinate specialty medical services off campus and ensure follow‑up care for youth.
- Provide ongoing supervision of medical clinic staff, including hiring, training, performance feedback, and documentation review.
- Collect and report monthly statistical data for Behavioral Health and Medical Services and review policies and procedures with facility administrators.
- Perform physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests, develop treatment plans, provide health education, and document all care in the medical record.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
- Current, valid licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or as a Physician Assistant from the Colorado Medical Board.
- Prescriptive authority (RXN status) per DORA.
- Minimum of 21 years of age.
- State of Colorado residency at the time of application and throughout employment.
- Full background check, including name check, fingerprint, court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, license verification, drug screen, PREA, trails check, CAPS, and motor vehicle record.
- Two or more years of experience with prescriptive authority in Colorado.
- Experience in adolescent health care and assessment of acute and chronic illness.
- Documentation in an electronic medical record.
- Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee.
- Knowledge of communicable disease prevention.
- Skill in diagnosing medical problems and creating treatment plans.
- Ability to prescribe medication and treat diagnosed illnesses using established protocols.
- Proficiency in mental status evaluation.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
