Overview

Manager, Transportation will ensure a Transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers, best‑in‑class service to customers, and safe and profitable operations. They will use their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Lead with a safety mindset that ensures every US Foods associate, the customers, and the general public with whom our drivers interact remain injury free.
  • Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through one‑on‑one coaching, training on policies and procedures, assistance in problem resolution, and leading by example.
  • Discuss performance with Senior Transportation Managers and create plans to address gaps in driver and associate performance.
  • Create an atmosphere in which upward communication is encouraged, and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates within the Transportation department.
  • Build high‑performing teams by participating in interviewing and hiring Transportation personnel, reviewing performance, coaching on service and safety targets, and delivering disciplinary action.
  • Monitor production goals and maintain a zero‑error attitude to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction. Anticipate, analyze, and troubleshoot delivery problems and devise cost‑effective and legal solutions.
  • Identify and stop waste, and improve processes to complete work more safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct routine safety and driver meetings.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
  • Investigate all accidents, maintain an accident file, track causes, and take appropriate preventative action.
  • Effectively schedule working shifts by leveraging appropriate planning tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
  • Other duties assigned by manager.
Supervision

Direct:
Union and/or non‑union Drivers.

Relationships
  • Internal:
    Transportation leaders and coworkers;
    Drivers;
    Warehouse leaders;
    Internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales).
  • External:
    Customers.
Work Environment

May spend significant time on the road, in a truck with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration levels potentially higher than those in passenger cars. Will also spend time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year of experience overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills.
  • Strong understanding of DOT requirements, familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
Travel
  • 10% travel required, typically for mandatory meetings and/or training.
Education / Training
  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
Physical Qualifications

Physical requirements include standing occasionally, walking occasionally, driving a vehicle frequently, sitting frequently. Lifting 1–10 lbs, 11–20 lbs, 21–50 lbs, 51–100 lbs are occasionally required; lifting over 100 lbs is never required. Carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing/balancing, stooping/squatting, kneeling, bending, reaching above the shoulder, twisting, grasping objects, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity are occasionally required.

Compensation

Compensation depends on relevant experience and/or education, specific skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law. The expected base rate for this role is between $58,000 – $110,000.
