Overview
We are seeking a proactive and detail-driven Business Rates Consultant to join a specialist rating team. The role involves managing client portfolios, advising on business rates liabilities, and delivering accurate, timely, and commercially focused solutions. You will work closely with clients, billing authorities, and internal stakeholders to help minimise rates exposure and ensure compliance across a varied property portfolio.

Key ResponsibilitiesManage a portfolio of commercial properties, ensuring clients achieve the lowest correct business rates liability
Review and verify business rates demands issued by billing authorities across England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland
Maintain accurate property and liability records, including occupation changes and rating list amendments
Act as a primary point of contact for clients and local authorities, resolving queries relating to assessments, reliefs, exemptions, and appeals
Identify and apply relevant reliefs and exemptions to reduce client liabilities
Manage payment cycles, reconciliations, refunds, and credit balances
Prepare reports, forecasts, and analysis to support cost-saving initiatives
Support historical rates audits and data reviews where required
Build and maintain strong client relationships, attending meetings and calls as needed
Ensure compliance with internal controls, statutory requirements, and service KPIs
Experience working with business rates liabilities, including calculations, reliefs, exemptions, and refunds
Understanding of rating principles, valuation methodologies, and relevant case law
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical matters clearly to clients and stakeholders
Confident dealing with billing authorities and resolving disputes or discrepancies
Good numerical and financial skills, with experience in reporting and analysis
Familiarity with rating software such as Calcurate or Riverlake (advantageous)
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel (intermediate level desirable)
IRRV qualification or membership (desirable but not essential)
