What you'll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity to work within the UK Parliament, as a Hansard Publisher. Hansard Publishers work within this team as members of the Procedural Publishing Unit, providing publishing services for teams across parliament with a particular focus on supporting both the Commons and the Lords.

This role is responsible mainly for the formatting, checking and nightly publication of Hansard documents. Destined for eventual inclusion in collected volumes of Hansard publications, these documents are also treated as daily parts and published to a no-fail deadline within several hours of the House of Commons and House of Lords rising. A shift allowance reflects the fact that work often continues into the early hours of the following day.

The documents are received in XML format from Hansard Reporters and Editors. The small team of Hansard Publishers you would be joining uses a bespoke Content Management System to output these XML files to PDF for overnight printing and to HTML for immediate publication to Parliament's web pages including the Hansard website and 'House Papers' app. Training in using this system will be provided.

In the long term, there may be training in the production of other business papers that the Procedural Publishing Unit is responsible for, including the Order Paper and legislative material, using a variety of publishing tools.

This role is part time: 18 hours per week split evenly across three days. It is an 18-month contract in the first instance with a view to it being extended.

  • Excellent attention to detail together with the ability to work speedily so that no-fail publications are produced accurately and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for publishing in digital formats.
