About us

St George's, University of London is the UK's only independent medical and healthcare higher education institution. St George's is a modern, innovative academic and research organisation built upon a rich history stretching back 250 years. Alumni include John Hunter, known as the father of modern surgery, and Edward Jenner, creator of the first vaccine, used to eradicate smallpox.

We share a site with St George's Hospital, one of the UK's largest teaching hospitals. Our smaller size lends a genuine community feel – students and staff can walk the corridors of our facilities from clinical teaching room to laboratory to hospital ward or clinic. As testament to this we were voted London's best student experience for two years in a row in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Research work at St George's is focused within three research institutes – Cardiovascular and Cell Sciences, Infection and Immunity and Population Health. We aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease in areas including infection and immunity, heart disease and stroke, and cell signalling. We are also focused on enhancing understanding of public health and epidemiology, clinical genetics, and social care sciences.

Job responsibilities

A standard full‑time Job Plan will contain 10 Programmed Activities which includes 8 PAs for direct clinical care and 2 supporting PAs. Sessions will be a mix of acute/emergency work and outpatient reporting. On‑call commitment is required. This post also includes teaching of undergraduates and radiology registrars in the department.

The diagnostic on‑call is overseen by a single consultant with the support of a second consultant radiologist on weekends. Each week on call and weekend working is compensated by time in lieu during the week. The post‑holder can expect up to approximately 5 weekends (on‑call/second consultant) per year. The department is currently exploring how to address 7 day working. In the future, further sessional working in the evenings and at the weekend on a rotational basis may also be required.

Each job plan will be reviewed within 3 months of appointment and will be subject to change. Whilst it is likely that most of the sessions will be based at St Georges, some evening working and lists at either the Nelson or Queen Marys Roehampton may be needed.
