Overview
This is a full-time clinical post based at Denmark Hill, King College Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The post involves working within a multi-disciplinary team to provide elective and emergency care for ophthalmology patients within paediatric and neuro services. The tenure is 12 months. Regular clinical duties are based between King College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital and include management of out-patients and in-patients, including ward referrals.
The post holder will take part in the on-call rota at King College Hospital, which includes provision of ophthalmic care to patients of UHL and QEH. Urgent referrals from General Practitioners, Optometrists, and the Accident & Emergency Departments of KCH, ULH and QEH are generally managed within the Early Referral Service (ERS) clinic; patients may be referred to the on-call team for emergency management.
Emergency referrals outside normal working hours are handled directly by the on-call team. Each day there are 1st and 2nd on-call trainees, each participating in a 1 in 10 rota with internal cover.
- Manage out-patients and in-patients, including ward referrals, with regular duties based between King College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
- Participate in the on-call rota at King College Hospital, providing ophthalmic care to patients of UHL and QEH.
- Handle urgent referrals from GPs, Optometrists, and A&E departments within the ERS framework; refer patients to the on-call team for emergency management as needed.
- Manage emergency referrals, particularly outside normal working hours, in collaboration with the on-call team and consultants.
- Follow the 1st and 2nd on-call rotas (1st on-call to be available in hospital until 22:00; 2nd on-call to assess and discuss emergencies with the on-call Consultant).
- Seek advice from the 2nd on-call and on-call Consultant when care uncertainty arises.
- Be allocated to the 2nd on-call rota as part of the role.
- MRCOphth or equivalent; eligible for full or limited GMC registration at the time of appointment; eligible to work in England.
- Proficiency in undertaking cataract surgery independently.
- Prior surgical experience in paediatric surgery.
