Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist – Mildred Creak Unit (8PAs)

Overview

An exciting opportunity has opened up within the Psychological and Mental Health Services (PAMHS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in this well established post. This offers candidates the chance to work as the consultant psychiatrist and service lead in this inpatient unit for children aged 7-14 at an international centre of excellence.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will lead on the assessment and treatment of up to 10 patients on the MCU. Particular patient groups include eating disorders, severe functional/psychosomatic presentations and a range of other severe/complex clinical presentations including Mood and Anxiety disorders, ASD, Severe OCD and Early onset psychosis. The postholder will also lead on managing referrals to the unit and will attend a weekly NHS England referral meeting as well as chairing a fortnightly MCU referral meeting.

The MCU Consultant oversees the care of all the patients and chairs the weekly Ward Round as well as weekly Review/CPA/Network Meetings.

The successful applicant will supervise the Core Trainee and the Higher Trainee resident doctors on MCU and work alongside a highly experienced MDT.

Main duties of the job

Clinical leadership within the Mildred Creak Unit team. The successful applicant will have overall clinical responsibility for the work on the MCU and will lead on the assessment and treatment of the 10 patients on the MCU (8 inpatients and 2 day patients). The day patient beds are used for step down purposes when required. Particular patient groups include eating disorders, severe functional/psychosomatic presentations and a range of other severe/complex clinical presentations including Mood and Anxiety disorders, ASD, Severe OCD and Early onset psychosis.

Length of stays average at around 5 months although a minority of patients require longer admissions.

The postholder will also lead on managing referrals to the unit and will attend a weekly NHS England referral meeting as well as chairing a fortnightly MCU referral meeting. Referral rates vary but are usually at least one each week as well as a number of enquiries.
