Overview
This role will be based day-to-day on the Respiratory and Acute Medicine wards at St Mary's Hospital. They will clerk sick patients on the medical take in normal working hours and have the opportunity to upskill in many aspects of respiratory medicine including COPD, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, non‑invasive ventilation and more. The applicant will be well‑supported by our knowledgeable and approachable consultant team at all times.

- Take a history and examine a patient.
- Identify and synthesise problems.
- Prescribe safely.
- Keep an accurate and relevant medical record.
- Manage time and clinical priorities effectively.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
- Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care.
- Act in a professional manner at all times.
- Cope with ethical and legal issues that occur during the management of patients with general medical problems.
- Educate patients effectively.
- Teach junior colleagues and medical students.
- Lead independent ward rounds and assess unwell patients.
- Attend structured teaching programmes provided by the department and regular SHO teaching (FY2 or IMT1/2 as appropriate).
- Take an active role in education and research, including completing one audit or research project and presenting at the weekly departmental educational meeting.
- Participate in daily board and ward rounds, complete jobs from the ward round, and attend weekly radiology meetings.
- Provide ward‑based care for 33 patients on Manvers ward, including an 8‑bedded acute respiratory unit, and periodically work on the Acute Medicine ward.
- Foundation Year 2 (FY2) or Internal Medicine Training Year 1 or 2 (IMT1/2) level.
- At least one year's experience working clinically as a doctor in the NHS.
- Respiratory experience is not essential – it will be gained during the post.
