The Henrietta Barnett School is seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic Subject Lead for Classics to teach Classics and lead the department from September 2026. The successful applicant will have the qualifications, skills and passion to teach Latin and Classical Civilisation to highly able students all the way from Key Stage 3 to A-level.
The Henrietta Barnett School is proud to be a state school delivering Classics. Latin is compulsory for students in Year 7 and is popular with students in Year 8 and 9. GCSE and A-level in both Latin and Classical Civilisation are delivered at the school. The school has, in the past, delivered Ancient Greek; the ability to support students studying Ancient Greek is helpful but not essential.
Every year, HBS students go onto top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, to study Classics.
- Excellent qualifications and knowledge of Latin and Classical Civilisation and related pedagogy to enable the development of an outstanding learning environment and challenge all the way through to Key Stage 5
- Proven record of securing the highest outcomes at GCSE and A-Level
- Experience of, or demonstrated passion for curriculum planning and assessment design
- The ability to employ a range of teaching strategies to develop an enthusiasm for the classical world and languages amongst students
- A commitment to active learning and the development of practical skills including the use of ICT
- The ability to accept responsibility and work independently
- The ability to lead, motivate and develop colleagues
- The ability to use data and evidence to monitor progress and drive improvement
- The ability to organise, prioritise, plan and co-ordinate a variety of tasks and procedures, and to work under pressure
- Enthusiasm and advocacy for the value of Classics within a broad secondary curriculum
Effective communication skills and the ability to create good professional relationships. The job involves formal and informal contact with students, parents and colleagues.
The Henrietta Barnett School is a fully selective girls' grammar school, situated in the beautiful surroundings of Hampstead Garden Suburb.
