The goal of the Department of Health Service & Population Research is to conduct world-leading research and education using the social and health sciences to better understand and to improve health outcomes, systems, and care, both locally and globally, particularly in disadvantaged and marginalised populations.

About the role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who can make a distinctive contribution to education. We are interested in recruiting someone with a background in health service research or health sciences. You should have excellent teaching and communication skills and be able to inspire and inform students. The postholder will play a key role in methods teaching, supporting students to develop strong analytical skills in areas such as statistics, epidemiology, and/or qualitative research, and to apply these approaches to real-world health challenges.

There will be opportunities to contribute to teaching in global mental health and related areas, within the department’s successful MSc programme in Global Mental Health. This would include teaching in different formats, including lecturing, workshop, tutorial, and practical teaching as required, assessment, research project supervision, and personal tutor roles. You may also support other undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses within the school and faculty, for example with project supervision.

There may be an opportunity to co-organise modules and develop teaching curriculum. In addition, the postholder may undertake education-related administrative responsibilities. You should be able to demonstrate suitable teaching skills and experience including curriculum development and assessment design, along with an ability to supervise student research dissertations. The content of a member of staff’s workload will be decided in discussion with the Head of Department or line manager.

This is a full-time post, and you will be offered a fixed-term contract for 2 years.

About you:

Essential criteria
  • PhD qualified in relevant subject area
  • Demonstration of appropriate subject knowledge.
  • Experience of delivering excellent teaching and assessment for postgraduate and/or undergraduate students.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate taught and undergraduate research projects.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, alongside good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent IT skills and experience with virtual learning environments (e.g., Moodle).
  • Skills in research design, including quantitative and/or qualitative research methods relevant for field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills relevant to teaching and pastoral support of students.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the UK Higher Education environment.
  • Higher Education accreditation/qualification (e.g., Advance HE Fellowship or PGCAPHE).
  • Experience of providing pastoral support and guidance to postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  • Ability to contribute to the Department’s teaching strategy.
  • Evidence of high self-motivation and ability to organize, plan and prioritize workload
