Cover Vocational Tutor - Prison Education
Location: HMP Brixton, London
Salary: From £30,000 - £35,000 + £5,000 London Weighting Allowance
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

We are seeking a passionate and adaptable Cover Vocational Tutor to join our education team at HMP Brixton. This is a unique opportunity to support learners in gaining valuable vocational skills, qualifications, and confidence that can help them build positive futures and improve their employment prospects.
As a Cover Vocational Tutor, you will play a key role in maintaining the continuity and quality of our vocational curriculum, delivering engaging lessons across multiple subject areas when permanent tutors are absent.
The RoleWorking within a secure educational environment, you will deliver high-quality vocational training to small groups of learners, supporting their development through practical learning and employability-focused education.
This role will provide cover across a variety of vocational curriculum areas, including:
- Carpentry & Joinery
- Plumbing
- Wall & Floor Tiling
- Painting & Decorating
- Dry Lining
- ICT / Digital Skills
- Food Safety
While experience across all disciplines is not expected,
candidates with experience in two or three of the above areas will be particularly well suited to this opportunity.
- Deliver engaging, practical vocational training across a range of subject areas.
- Promote employability skills including teamwork, communication, professionalism, and workplace behaviours.
- Embed digital skills into learning programmes to prepare learners for employment.
- Plan and adapt lessons to meet individual learner needs and abilities.
- Support learners with varying educational backgrounds, including those with additional learning needs.
- Monitor learner progress and provide effective feedback.
- Build learner confidence, motivation, and engagement through inclusive teaching practices.
- Maintain workshop safety, tool accountability, and compliance with health and safety standards.
- Complete all required documentation, including registers, assessments, Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and learner records.
- Work closely with colleagues, prison staff, and support services to provide a consistent and positive learner experience.
- Support learners in working towards qualifications and developing their Employability Passport.
- Maths and English qualifications at Level 2 or above.
- Vocational industry experience in at least two of the following areas
: - Carpentry & Joinery
- Plumbing
- Wall & Floor Tiling
- Painting & Decorating
- Dry Lining
- ICT / Digital Skills
- Food Safety
- Teaching qualification at Level 4 or above, or willingness to work towards one.
- Strong classroom management and learner engagement skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
- Experience planning, delivering, and assessing vocational learning.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet a wide range of learner needs.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, equality and diversity, and health & safety requirements.
- Resilience, adaptability, and confidence working within a challenging but rewarding environment.
- A genuine passion for helping learners gain skills, qualifications, and confidence.
- Assessor qualification (TAQA, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent).
- Experience teaching across multiple vocational subjects.
- Understanding of the OFSTED Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
- Experience using diagnostic assessment tools such as BKSB.
- Previous experience within prison education, adult learning, employability programmes, or apprenticeships.
- A multi-skilled tradesperson looking to transition into education.
- An experienced vocational tutor who enjoys variety and delivering across multiple disciplines.
- A construction professional with knowledge of several trades who wants to pass on their skills.
- An educator who can adapt quickly and confidently teach different vocational subjects.
